Myofascial decompression therapy

“Myofascial decompression therapy, often used for TMJ treatment, relieves pain and sore muscles by promoting blood flow and stimulating the release of toxins.”

Myofascial decompression therapy is used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), placing several glass, plastic or silicone “cups” on the body.  It creates a local suction on the skin to activate our body’s lymphatic system, improve blood circulation and reduce muscle strain and stiffness.  It releases myofascial; and improves Qi (energy) flow.  Myofascial decompression therapy is especially effective as TMJ treatment.

History of cupping therapy:

Cupping therapy has been around for over 3,000 years.  In fact, historians found records of its use dating back to 1,550 B.C. in Egypt.  In ancient Egyptian, Chinese and Middle Eastern cultures cupping was common-place.  In ancient Greece, around 400 B.C., Hippocrates used cupping for internal disease and structural problems.  In China, its earliest recorded use is from the famous Taoist alchemist and herbalist Ge Hong (281–341 A.D.).

How myofascial decompression works:

The cups are placed open-side-down on strategic areas of your skin.  As the air inside the cup cools, a vacuum is created.  This pulls the skin slightly up inside the cup creating a localized stretch on the connective tissue (fascia) under the skin.  The improved blood circulation helps the body eliminate waste that has built up in the surrounding tissue and brings fresh, nourishing blood to the area in need.  The cups are usually left in place for several minutes.  When removing the cups it will usually leave a “cupping mark”.  This slight discoloration will fade and disappear within a few days.

There are several types of cups that may be used:

  • Glass cups, the traditional kind.
  • Kangzhu cups, which are plastic with a suction tool.
  • Baguanfa cups are silicone and can be popped on and off or moved around by hand.
  • Biomagnetic cups which utilize the positive and negative charges to facilitate healing.
  • Facial cups are designed specifically for the face and will not leave any discoloration for the facial rejuvenation service.

Cupping marks:

Myofascial decompression therapy affects the fascia – the connective tissue in the body that covers the muscles.  The therapy is often used as TMJ Treatment as well as for back cupping (cupping therapy for back pain).  It releases pathogens, toxins, blockages and impurities from the tissue.  These waste materials are brought to the skin surface by the suction process and may produce circular “marks.”  Usually in a few days some of the toxins escape directly from the skin into the atmosphere; others disperse through the blood stream – and the marks disappear.
